FOOTPRINTS: THE PEOPLE AND PLACES OF EARLY CLARENCE PLAINS AND ROKEBY BY WENDY ANDREW RRP $34.99

This study singled out the old township of Rokeby as an area where the important history should be recognized.  In late 1998 a successful centenary of federation Community Projects grant enabled the research and development of the Old Rokeby Historic Trail. Today  we see the regularly used trail extended through a once badly degraded riparian area of the Clarence Plains Rivulet, opening up a nature walk through one of the earliest settled properties in the region.  It has proved to be a recreational and educational asset.  This book is not intended to be a comprehensive history of the settlement of the eastern shore but it is important to set the direction of the explorers, the settlements, and the prominent people who rose out of these efforts and were important to the history of Clarence Plains in general and Rokeby in particular.

THE WILD RIDE: REVOLUTIONS THAT SHAPED TASMANIAN BLACK & WHITE WILDERNESS PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIC HAYGARTH RRP $59.95 BC $54.99

The Industrial revolution drove Tasmanian black-and-white landscape photographers out of town to meet the wild one.  The dry plate freed them technically.   The mining boom railed them to the bush, and the internal combustion engine crashed them through it.  Social developments underpinned this charge: ‘muscular’ Christianity, higher living standards, ‘progressive’ nature study and the conservation movement.  Wilderness photography raised environmental awareness long before Peter Dombrovskis’s ‘Rock Island Bend’ helped free the Franklin River in 1983.  From the sublime of John Watt Beattie to the skyline tour of Fred Smithies, The Wild ride is their story.
